Spring Fever Meander – by Pat Dettmer
Kicking off the season for 2025 turned out to be a great time with eleven Miatas, 18 members and 1 guest meeting at Loma Linda’s parking lot to prepare for the spring drive. No rain was in the forecast, but cooler temperatures caused members to drive with the top up. Fortunately, it was a fairly short drive as Diane Shull’s very tall guest did manage to fit into the car.
Meandering through Oak Openings Park, the south side of the Maumee River, and Tontogany Creek Road was enjoyed by the group as we saw the trees and spring flowers preparing to bloom and the deer
roaming in the fields.
Doc’s Ribcage Restaurant seemed to please the hearty appetites of everyone with barbecued ribs being the favorite choice. While our food was being prepared, Dave Beasley introduced his friend,
Bobby Carwile and son Ryan. Bobby gave a short presentation about his history of drag racing all kinds of cars. Son Ryan has taken an interest in racing Miatas.
As the luncheon ended, the sun had come out and warmed up the temps so members went outside to check out Ryan’s racing Miata. Since Bobby lives close by, those that lingered a while longer got a special treat of seeing the 1964 Malibu that Bobby races. Even though she is not the “little old lady from Pasadena”, Sue Greeley did get to climb into the driver’s seat. Once the oohs and aahs were finished, we all climbed into our little “race cars “ and headed home.

The Tire Squeal involves driving a loop of roads at your own pace, while stopping to sample the local food, including that “delicacy”, Indian Pork Tenderloin. An homage to Germany’s Nürburgring, it’s called The Schweinefiletringtm (translation: Pork Tenderloin Ring)!
It’s a charity event for Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, so donations are appreciated, but not required. You can score points to win prizes by visiting locations of interest and restaurant but the contest is optional, so you can just have fun doing the drive. Complete info is available at https://schweinefiletring.com/home.
In the past, we have had several cars from our club participate. We do one day of back road driving to a motel in the area, two days of driving around in circles and catching local attractions, then a day’s drive back home. It can be done any time during the two week period of the event.
If this sounds interesting, contact Bill Potvin at bpotvin24@gmail.com and indicate four day periods you would be available between June 7 and 22.

30th Anniversary Celebration
As you can see in the announcement above, long time club members and all around nice guys, Pat and Steve Beam, have generously offered to host this event, including providing their country estate, as well as the food.
More details will follow, but please respect their generosity by responding in a timely way, so that they can plan for the correct amount of food.
Spring Adopt-A-Highway
Even though the club’s first road cleanup of the year was in May, the weather was more like early April. No matter to Jarvis Gamble and his merry band of men and women powered through the rain and picked up a sizable collection of trash.
Thanks to Sue Greeley, Jordan May, Mike Burns, Pat Dettmer, Dave Beasley and Bob Reitzel.
