Most institutions, including clubs, evolve throughout their history. Some even change dramatically. What was apparent at the NWOhio Miata Clubs 30th anniversary celebration was that this organization has steadfastly maintained its prime mission – to bring together Miata owners in a spirit of fellowship and camaraderie. The gathering of the 42 attendees at the event made that point in spades. The club had acknowledged its history periodically since its inception with gatherings at the 10, 15, 20 and 25 year marks, but none compared with the enthusiasm and organization of this year’s get- together. This was due in large part to the efforts of Steve and Pat Beam. They not only provided the venue, but covered the complete cost – a huge tent with tables and chairs for all, a meal catered by Delta 109 featuring three meats, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, and soft drinks. Adding a heartwarming, homemade touch to the meal, our gracious hosts contributed their culinary talents. Steve prepared his renowned baked beans, deviled eggs, and peppers and onions, while Pat treated everyone to homemade sour cherry pies. If you think that’s a lot, they also gave each attendee a cap with our Meanders logo and a 30th Anniversary inscription. Also, thanks to Teresa Raymond for supplying new nifty Membership Directories with photos and contact info for all of our members.
A brief shower at the beginning of the afternoon provided a refreshing cool-down, but did not dampen the high spirits of the attendees. The afternoon was dedicated to socializing, reminiscing, and strengthening the bonds that make our club so special. At Marv Himmeleins suggestion, we all went around the table and introduced ourselves. There were a lot of long-time members present, and we were also happy to meet Mike & Jenne Cairns and Kevin & Nancy Medere, who were attending their first club event. It was a lot of fun hearing how folks got started with the club. We all gave a round of applause for founder Bill Potvin, who related the origin story the club. Bill also read a nice note from Mike Kraus, telling of the great and lasting friendships he has made in the club. Mike joined in 1996, and though he moved to Missouri in 2008, has maintained his membership even to this day. A special treat was when the Beams provided a history lesson on their property. It dates back 150 years to when Pats great-grandfather built the original house and established what is now a 130 acre farm. It is still
being farmed, but interestingly, there are also eight acres of virgin woods that have been preserved. Of course, the house has undergone renovations during that time, but parts of the original foundation still exist. Pat led a tour of the house so that folks could enjoy the living history. We extend our deepest gratitude to Steve and Pat Beam for hosting such a memorable and elegant anniversary party. Their generosity made for a perfect celebration of our club’s history and the friendships that define us. Here’s to many more years of driving!
